Great story, great action,
great game!
This game is a really good
piece of work and I had a lot of fun playing it. The story is very
engrossing and kept me interested all the way to the end. The fact that
Spiderman has periodic choices to make between going the way of the
black suit (bad) or the red suit (good), really adds that much more to
the game. I played through with the red suit first and found myself
instantly wanting to play through the game again to see what would
happen at different points in the game had I chosen the black suit.
The
voice acting of the various characters you meet is surperb! In my
opinion, it's what really sets this game apart from other Spiderman
games. Even if there wasn't the black/red suit paths to take I would
still want to play through this game again just to hear the excellent
voice work. Spiderman's wise-cracks when he's fighting enemies is also
very memorable. I'd get kind of tense during some of the boss battles,
but then Spiderman would make some kind of taunt/insult at the enemy and
I just couldn't help from laughing!
The control scheme is pretty
well put together. You are introduced to different moves while you are
playing the game, so it doesn't feel like you have to go through a
structured tutorial. As you progress through the game, you "buy" new
moves and powers by upgrading your basic abilities with the experience
you've earned from defeating enemies and accomplishing missions. The
upgrade method is implemented very well. You don't have to think too
much about it, and you are shown a short "demo clip" of what the move
does before you upgrade/purchase it.
There are some minor
problems with the game though which kept me from giving it 5 stars
overall. It's very "console-y". You can definitely tell it was made for
the Xbox 360 and Playstation when you're in the menu screens. You're
forced to navigate the menu with the keyboard, which really kind of
bugged me at first. However, if you have a gamepad then this really
isn't an issue (I only really ever play with a keyboard and mouse). A PC
game (even a console port) should always have that "PC" feel. Also, the
camera has problems properly angling itself when you are running up the
sides of buildings. I was never really able to get the camera angle how
I wanted it during wall-runs so I could see far enough ahead of myself.
Sometimes you have to fight enemies on the walls and it was a major
headache at times trying to get the camera to show me what I needed to
see. However, these are very minor gripes and I wish I could give this
game 4.5 stars overall.
A note to parents: this game does have
some mild language in it. For instance, when you are tasked with taking
out some gang members because they are endangering people with their
constant turf wars, some of the gang members will say, "Looks like
somebody wants to get their a** kicked!" when you start to fight them.
And also, at one point you see Wolverine cutting himself with his claws
to get rid of some symbiotes and you ask him if it hurts. Wolverine then
acknowledges by saying, "Like h*ll." So there's minor stuff like that
scattered thoughout the game.
This really is a top-notch game
that you will have hours of fun playing. It's not too long unless you
decide to do all the optional missions (which I actually found to be
quite boring). You get additional experience points but you don't really
need them, as just doing the main missions will give you more than
enough points to upgrade both suits with all moves/powers.
And if
you're a SecuROM hater, don't worry--this game doesn't use it. It does
do a CD check but it doesn't utilize any invasive measures.
Spiderman: WOS has some problems but overall the
game is a real gem!
As the other reviewer already
stated this game is over the top. But he failed to mention that this
game requires good hardware meaning at least a dual core proccessor and a
highend graphics card like a 9600 Nvidia GF.
You can play this
with a single core though. I have a 2.6 ghz, 1.5 RAM, 7600 GF 512 MB
system which is low end by far and it runs sluggish even on low
settings. The thing is this game was built from ground up to run on
multi-core systems so keep that in mind before you but. If anything make
sure you have at least 2 gigs of RAM and a highend graphics card.
The
game play is pretty much awesome like the first reviewer said so I
don't have to add anything to what has been already said. However, he
also failed to mention that you really need a game pad like a XBox 360
game pad to get the most out of this game. The mouse has some lagging
issues and if your playing below specifications then it was hinder your
progress through the game. For example on a early mission where you have
to take several of these sniper guys on top of buildings - the mission
is timed which I hate especially when controling Spiderman which is
sluggish so you guessed it frustration sets in. A game pad would work
better in terms of control.
The graphics are nice but if your
computer is old like mine forget about setting video resolution to max.
In fact you might want to set everything to the lowest settings and work
up from there turning on video features seperately to see what slows
down the game and what doesn't.
The voice acting is really
refreshing as the past reviewer noted. Spiderman has some funny comments
in the missions. For example in one mission a friend tells him to meet
him near this church at sundown to overlook a peace treaty between two
rival gang leaders and Spiderman says "OK, there.......partner - I'll
meet you there...at sundown" - "Be there...or be square" which is funny
because he uses a southern - western accent when saying this line.
The
controls are not as great as the previous reviewer mentioned. Like I
said before a XBox 360 game pad controller will work much better. Make
sure if you do use the mouse that you set your sensitivity up a little
higher than the default in case you have slow downs during the game
where you can compensate for this.
The camera really needs to be
fixed as well. Sometimes the camera gets stuck in the wrong direction.
There is a patch out (1.1) which introduces a game settings menu before
you begin the game but does nothing to help the sluggishness or bad
camera angles you run into during the game.
Overall, Spiderman:
WOS needs more patches for the PC version but as is - it's playable on
the PC. Really if they just fix the performance and camera control
issues the game would be perfect. As is it's a dimound in the rough.
Keeps Getting Better!
I have owned and played just
about every Spider-Man game ever made and this one is by far the best.
Every time they make these games it gets a little bit better. There are
more iconic animations, and even when you're making "mistakes" now,
Spider-Man still looks cool. For instance, in Spider-Man 3 he would bump
into walls and look like a fool, but now he runs on walls always
instead of bumping into them, and feels like he has a lot more strength
(more like the comic books). There are many improvements in that
department so I won't list them all, but they are getting closer and
closer to perfectly fluid animations 100% of the time. Great job in this
one.
The black suit has always been my FAVORITE. In all of the
past games most didn't even have the ability to use the black suit, and
when they did it was really hard to get, or didn't really do anything
special, and you were always kind of pushed to NOT use it... which was a
terrible shame.
This game lets you use the black suit ALL the
time and you can switch it on or off at any moment without even going
into a menu, the way it should be! The black suit looks awesome, and has
entirely different abilities when you're using it. You can switch
between red and black between combos even if you like to get that crazy.
The
battle mechanics have been completely enhanced. You can pull yourself
into any enemy with your web non-stop in a beautiful display of aerial
acrobatics as you lay waste to your foes in any plain you chose to fight
on. The ground, the walls, or in the sky. All 3 are equally
entertaining and provide so many dynamics that the fighting is only
boring if you're choosing to make it that way by being repetitive. If
you like only fighting on the ground, you can pull your enemies down
there so you're not forced to fight on walls or in the air generally
(but the new aerial fighting moves are an absolute blast!).
The
hidden Tokens this time are a lot easier to find, and all they do is
increase your web swinging speed and reach, and you don't have to get
all of them to feel extremely godly in your distance and abilities.
There
is only ONE tiny problem with this game. You can't do a web swing with
both hands shooting a web out, (swing from left, to right, kind of like a
monkey not quite letting go of the first branch before grasping the
next)This is a very iconic way of web swinging and it is sad that it
took a while to get it in these games, and now it's gone. I'm pretty
sure it was Spider-Man 3 that finally got that in the game almost
perfectly, so it is really odd to see that a feature was lost in this
game. Over-all it is still a huge improvement in just about every other
aspect compared to the predecessors(other than graphics but that is to
be expected as they are pumping these games out faster than graphics and
processors can get much better).
I think this game runs a little
better than Spider-Man 3 because they want back to a more comic book
style (not cartoon-like, or cell shading though) and it is not trying to
do complex shading and reflections. In fact, there are absolutely no
options to mess with the graphics other than resolution which is kind of
odd. You certainly need one heck of a CPU to run it smoothly though. I
have a really nice Intel Quad Core and an Nvidia GTX 295 and the FPS
doesn't hold completely solid if you have the entire city in your field
of view and you're zooming really fast. Still runs better than
Spider-Man 3 though, and is perfectly smooth for me about 99% of the
time.
If you enjoyed the other Spidey games, then this one is a
major upgrade to the series!
