Command your army.. In real time as you lead the charge!5 This game is the singular most amazing game I have come across in all my years of gaming. It's a great mix of role play and real time strategy. This game does feel like it's not totally complete, but even then this game is outstanding. It's a great sandbox game, but it's gives you a bit too much freedom to the point you don't really know where to start. There's a lot to this game, but I'll just explain a bit about the gameplay. I'll leave the specs about int/str and various stats to you to look up if you decided this game sounds like your cup of tea. There's also a sequel called Mount&Blade: Warband, though I haven't played it yet. Gameplay - You start your adventure by yourself, traveling to small villages and recruiting men with you on your adventure. You are free to roam around from village to village building up your army. Or you may drop by a local castle to offer your services to a lord and build your relationship with him and his kingdom. Once you've helped their faction for a while you are eligible to pledge your allegiance with the liege of that kingdom. Once you have been established as a vassal of an kingdom, this is where the fun/drama begins! The various lords will often bicker with one another and you'll be put into the middle of it, you can perform various task for lords to gain their friendship. Tedious task such as training men for them, being their mail carrier, or buying them some cows so they can feed their soldiers that are currently besieging a castle/city. OR you can go from village to village, building up your army and once you've amassed a decent size army you can attempt to sack a city and establish your own kingdom, or if you fear retaliation from the kingdom you attacked you can pledge your city to another kingdom, but chances are he will assign the lordship to the castle to someone else instead of leaving it to you. You can recruit loyal retainers who are fully at your disposal. As they level you can pick what skills they have and what items they use. If you choose to establish your own kingdom they can help you in your propaganda war to assert yourself as the rightful owner of all the lands. There are two very clear classes of recruits. There are those who are criminals/commoners and those who are rich merchants and from a well established family. These two social difference will cause a huge drift in your kingdom if you appoint them as lords in your kingdom. "Blah blah is nothing more then a commoner, he doesn't deserve to own land" (-5 relationship with lord ______) Yep it's like that every few turns if you decided to cast both social status to lordship. Battles - You will always be starting every battle off on your horse, unless you unequipped your horse. At first battles will be slow and easy, great for beginners to learn the ropes and practice how to kill someone on a horse or shoot a bow from your horse. As you add men to your army you'll soon be fighting in 80 v 80 fights and you had better know how to play by now or have very capable men on your side. Sieges - All sieges start out either with a siege tower or post set up ladders on the castle. If you plan to be the first one to storm the ladders up the castle, you had better have a strong shield to block those arrows. Otherwise you may want to organize your shock troops to go up there while you swap to your range weapon (bow, throwing axe/daggers, crossbows, javelins) and unleash it on the archers shooting at your guys. Once you killed all the soldiers, you'll be inside the streets of the city or the inner keep (pending on whether your attacking a city or castle) once your done with that the city/castle will be yours. Overview - While this game is great fun and there's nothing like this game, there is a lot of flaws to this game. There isn't a definite storyline, and I feel that if this game had a solid storyline it'd be a lot more fun for first time players. This is a really fun game, don't let the minor bugs prevent you from giving this game a shot. There are patches that address the issues, though I haven't played this game in a while. Even if the game company didn't introduce a patch, the M&B community would of. This game has an amazing cult following. And for $8.99 don't pass this up! Great on its own..AMAZING with MOD!5 For an indie game, this is one of the best. The battles are epic. However, by simply installing the Sword of Damocles mod, this become an epic game overall. The graphics are improved in the mod, and there are hours...or days...worth of gameplay to explore. I paid $10 myself in store, and that was a deal (or a curse depending on how you measure the value of time). I'm not even an RPG type of gamer, but this was a steal and WAY too much fun. Get it. You will enjoy it.
