Some may find it too easy but I love it
I never liked Tetris games
and their clones until the game "Chime" came along. Similarly, I think
Playrix is going to make me enjoy match-3 games by way of Fishdom:
Seasons under the Sea.
Just in time for the holidays, Playrix is
out with three season-themed fishtanks, "Tank-or-Treat", "Tanksgiving",
and "Deep Sea Cheer". Like previous Fishdom games, you solve match-3
puzzles to rack up money in order to buy items for your tank and the
items you can buy are similarly themed. Nothing scary in the halloween
tank, moms, it's just cartoonish stuff like a Grim Reaper Shark, a Mummy
Guitar Player and similar decorations. Your tank can also be made into a
screensaver if you wish.
The game starts off really easy for bad
players like me so match-3 aficionados may want to choose timed mode if
they want a little more challenge. You can switch back to relaxed mode
in the options at any time. It's easy enough that anyone should be able
to get the bronze cup in each of the tanks, but as you progress the
puzzles increase in difficulty and you may find it difficult to get the
silver and gold without some strategic planning and a little luck. For
instance, one of the most frustrating puzzles for me are when we have to
clear a spot that's not part of the puzzle and only accessible by a
bomb. Not only do we need to solve a match-5 in order to get a bomb but
it must be solved in a certain column so the bomb's explosion will reach
this difficult spot. If you pull off challenges like these and get your
silver and gold cups, there's a bonus tank that becomes available.
I've
always liked the cute graphics, the catchy music and the detailed
animations in Playrix games and this one's no exception. I noticed a
couple of odd bugs, however. A blue striped fish frequently has what
appears to be the beginning of a cartoon thought-bubble above his head.
If I switch from a halloween tank to a thanksgiving tank, the pieces
will remain halloween themed for a while. I'm not sure if that was
intentional but the theme of the match-3 pieces seem to change at random
regardless of which tank theme you have selected. The fish also seem to
eat constantly, even the skeleton fish, if you buy them a feeder. They
must be Carolinian fish. None of this affects gameplay, though.
Experts
may think Seasons Under the Sea is too easy but it's a lot of fun for
beginners and it may be one of the match-3 games this amateur player
will spring for. I may even be able to finish it before the end of the
holidays.
